What is Budokon Yoga?
To put it in a nutshell Budokon Yoga is a hybrid practice between Yoga and Martial Arts.
Budokon yoga was created by Cameron Shayne in early 2001 and is now being taught by Cameron and his wife Melayne Shane in their school in Whitefish Montana and around the world.
It’s considered a science, an art and a philosophy which synchronises classical yoga with martial arts, calisthenics, animal locomotion and mind sciences.
The word Budokon is comprised of the syllables BU meaning warrior, DO meaning way and KON meaning spirit.
Budokon yoga seeks for balance and unification of opposite forces, the warrior and the peacemaker, the yogi.
This modern style of yoga unites the ancient tradition of self inquiry with various forms of mixed martial art movement. It’s a condition practice for movers of all types seeking the highest level of agility, mobility, and strength. Cameron describes it beautifully: “When we move we must embody the scientist, the artist and the philosopher all at once. So complex is the role that most only master one or the other. Yet the artist without the scientist is chaotic, and the scientist without the philosopher is insensitive. Together they make the ultimate mover.”
The foundation of a Budokon practice is the Budokon Yoga Primary Series.
It consists of 7 intelligently assembled sections of slow and controlled movements designed to improve mobility, agility, flexibility and strength. The techniques are learned through repetition and precision, the emphasis being on the transitions from posture to posture, rather than holding the postures. The focus is on the constant transition in and out of the poses, it’s a continuous slow and precise flow keeping your mind on the present moment.
Another important aspect of Budokon is animal locomotion, i.e. moving like quadrupeds. Cameron and Melayne Shayne believe that animal locomotion matters because humans evolved from quadrupeds.
The moral code of Budokon is rooted in Buddhism, it teaches you how to press the reset button in your mind and adopt a beginner mindset. It will also ask you to be fluid and relative in your thinking, develop your emotional intelligence and review the patterns in your relationships. It’s a dive in your limbic brain and an opportunity to grow.
BEYOND Budokon Yoga IS BUDOKON MARTIAL ARTS BELT SYSTEM
The system works by using different "tools" for different situations, where the situations are divided into ranges, from longest to shortest, kicking, punching, clenching, throwing, grappling and weapons. BDK has a 6 belt system (white, red, blue, purple, brown, black) in which students progress by learning and creating unique movement patterns (kata) drawing from striking, grappling, yoga, animal locomotion and calisthenics.
